Honey import and distribution process

Honey import and distribution process

The flow of honey after being produced in or imported into the EU. Imports into the EU are only permitted from authorised third countries or regions laid down in Regulation (EU) 2021/405.

  • 30 % of all EU honeys are directly marketed from the beekeepers to the consumers.
  • 70 % are marketed to retail and industry and afterwards to the consumers.
  • 80 % are polyfloral blossom honeys, which are blends of several botanical origins.

These figures vary from member country to member country.

Honey import and distribution process

Companies source the honey from beekeepers from various countries within the EU and outside of the EU.

After arriving in barrels of for example 300 kg each, the honey is combined to blends.

One blend consists for example of 3000 kg of honey from up to ten different botanical and geographical origins.

After the blending process, the honey is jarred and distributed to the consumers either directly or i.e., via retailers.
